Whatever Brains // Whatever Brains
Before delving into this album it might be best to prepare yourself. With no regard for how it might affect your psyche, North Carolina noisemakers Whatever Brains have dropped their self-titled sophomore LP on an unsuspecting world. And if you are new to the band just know that they are bound to be a polarizing force with no conceivable room for middle ground. Either you’re gonna be of the camp that hates them for all their quirks or you will be a voracious fan who finds them and all their spunk exciting stuff. I happen to be of the latter group.
There’s no mistaking it, this album is loud, brash, and downright weird. And for all the band’s idiosyncrasies, when it really comes down to it the vocals will be the hardest sell. They are a strange pitch and come off as snotty and confrontational and yet they bring an element of frantic excitement and unpredictability to the music that ultimately becomes one of its most defining features. So adding them to the music, which itself is a weird punk hybrid led by ADD-riddled guitar work, weird time signatures, and relentless drumming, you get an album that is most definitely not for everyone. But if you stick with it, you’ll find a release that is invigorating in its commitment oddball freneticism.
Whatever Brains is out now digitally (pay what you want on bandcamp) and soon on 12” vinyl through Sorry State Records. If you’re into genre-bending punk music then you’re gonna want to check this one out.
